Education

What is Education in Emergencies?

Education is a basic right for every child and remains critically important during conflict, providing normalcy, stability, and hope amid chaos. In Gaza, conflict has displaced nearly all children, causing trauma and disrupting social structures. Maintaining access to education supports children’s mental and emotional wellbeing by allowing them to continue learning and developing.

Displacement has severely disrupted education in Gaza, with schools either destroyed or used as shelters for thousands of displaced people. This has denied nearly every child access to learning opportunities, further compounding trauma and severing essential social networks.

Even makeshift schools in bombed-out rooms or shelters offer a stable environment where children can come together and focus on something other than conflict. Education provides a structured routine, mitigating the psychological impact of war and supporting the healing process. It also lays the foundation for personal and societal recovery.

Investing in education during conflicts is a humanitarian necessity and a strategic move to encourage sustainable development, ensuring we do not lose a generation to war.
